-
All the projects are conceived as long-term, self-financing modules, i.e. they only require the initial external funding.
-
Most of these projects can obviously be considered as interlinked, i.e. their full implementation depends to a certain extent on the implementation of the related projects.
Video studio & production centre
In the past, the temples used to employ large number of dancers who gave regular live performances. Today, television, DVDs, and the Internet appear to be ideal distibution channels and heritage preservation media for the adapted classical Indian dance-related production, as its potential audience are scattered all over the world, which explains the major difficulties in arranging live performances.
The video delivery channels require producing to be of a certain standard, and renting professional video equipment and studios is not an ideal solution, especially in case of the classical Indian dance production, where it is often necessary to shoot the same episode dozens of times over an extended period of time in order to capture the moments where the dancers succeed in bringing out the intricacy of the spiritual nuances.
| Objectives |
- To establish a base for video production presenting the authentic classical Indian dance specifically for the non-Indian audiences
- To provide a long-term support solution for the young dancers
|
| Brief description of main components |
- The most essential components in any video studio are
the professional video, audio, lighting, video editing, computer equipment and supplies. While the minimum budget would be sufficient to produce the DVD and Internet video, it should be noted that for the TV production, not mentioning the HDTV, the standards are much more demanding.
- As such equipment has to be handled by the professionals who have to be hired and paid, the project stipulates the costs of employing the professional staff too, as the volunteer assistance alone is insufficient.
- As most of the production locations are spread over South India and Orissa, just as the dancers, it is necessary to have an adequate vehicle, taking into account the state of most roads.
- The construction of at least a basic studio building is very desirable too, as well as of the DVD production unit and of a small office.

Research
What is known today as the classical Indian dance is merely meagre remnants of the once rich and multi-faceted sacred dance culture. Although certain attempts to restore many aspects of the ancient knowledge have already been made, far more research is yet to be conducted.
| Objectives |
- To explore the deeper aspects of the sacred temple dance culture, including the educational aspects, and preserve heritage of the ancient traditions of the devadasis
- To assist the experts and dancers to restore the elements that have been lost since the Natya Shatra times.
- To research the delivery media nuances specific to the classical Indian dance-related production
- To investigate the differences in the perception of such production across different cultures and social strata
|
| Brief description of main features |
- Locating the remaining authentic devadasis and maharis and documenting their knowledge in the printed and video formats.
- Co-ordinating the experts' research activities of the ancient texts, temple sculptures, etc., as well as of the contemporary developments in the classical Indian dance area.
- Organizing the dancers' experimental work.
- Conducting the psychophysiological experiments that would highlight the differences in the cross-cultural perception and the psychological effects of the adapted CID-related production and other performing art forms.
- Producing the results of the research in the form of publications, including the Internet publications, and videos.

Internet-based
Most dancers and gurus in India are not Internet users, and can only speak basic English. Moreover, even those who understand certain things about the Internet are still unaware of its full potential that could serve both the dancers and the audience worldwide.
| Objectives |
- To set up a virtual exchange where the producers, programme organizers, students could find the dancers dance experts that they need, and where the dancers could find work opportunities and distribute their production
- To assist the dance gurus in setting up distance education activities
- To establish and promote an objective dancers' ranking system directly based on the spectators' votes/feedback
- To create awareness among the Internet-illiterate dancers and gurus of the Internet's potential
|
| Brief description of main features |
- Developing a multi-lingual, virtual classical Indian dance portal with a dancers directory with video profiles, interactive features, and a virtual exchange.
- Creating a physical centre where the Internet-illiterate dancers and gurus would go to find the assistance they need
- Conducting an awareness campaign through the convensional vernacular printed media, local television channels, direct mail, etc.

Dancers support system
The developed countries have very efficient systems of encouraging, supporting and promoting their young talents as well as professional artistes. In India, the scholarships, awards, prize distribution and promotion system is too far from perfect.
The pilot project conducted by the ACE for a virtually unknown 14-year-old dancer from Chennai has shown that even such young talents can receive a worldwide renown and appreciation, as well as find numerous supporters and sponsors, and secure a stable source of income.
| Objectives |
- To promote the public perception of the classical Indian dance as a viable and stable career regardless of one's caste, religion, social background, family ties, etc.
- To assist the dancers with in applying for grants, scholarships, fellowships, participation in festivals, international exchange programmes, etc.
- To help the dancers improve their communicative skills, inlcuding the Internet proficiency
|
| Brief description of main features |
- A media campain highlighting the successful dancers, the outcome of the ACE pilot project, the new opportunities
- Perfecting and streamlining the process of identifying and promoting the young talents nationwide based on the objective evaluation
- Setting up a centre where the dancers could receive the assistance and training that they need
- Developing new marketing, distribution, promotional and presentation systems that would generate more productions by young talented dancers

Educational
The existing educational materials, books and videos, can at best be regarded as a very basic, inapt and often inadequate introduction to the classical Indian dance, and barely touch its spiritual aspects. Most of the materials do not adequately address the cultural specifics of the classical Indian dance.
| Objectives |
- To facilitate the spread of the classical Indian dance among both the students in India and the non-Indians worldwide
- To highlight the spiritual aspect of the classical Indian dance promoting it as a form of Natya Yoga
|
| Brief description of main features |
- Conducting research of the past and contemporary teaching techniques
- Organize workshops and seminars focussed on discovering the more efficient teaching methods in the contemporary contexts
- Producing publications, including the Internet publications, and educational videos.

Natya Mandir
The sacred temple dance's native settings used to provide the unparalleled experience both for the spectators of the live performances and for the dancers. Nowadays, there are no dance spaces built in accordance to the Natya Shastra's guidelines.
Although it is possible to word the rational substantiation for the need and scientific benefits of building of Matrimandir or the Natya Mandir in Auroville, we would like to state that its rationale lies beyond the boundaries of the rational mind and any futile attempts to provide a shallow utilitarian explanation.
Objectives
(rational explanation) |
To set up a physical base that would provide a perfect environment where dancers could share the deeper layers of their
art with the audience |
Objectives
(true explanation) |
To create a physical space where the celestial beings could express themselves through the dancers, and where the audience could be truly enlightened through their performances |
| Brief description of main features |
Building in Auroville a classical dance centre that would include the dancing hall (auditorium) of the Natya Mandir, as well as an auxiliary hall for dance classes and workshops, and an administrative building. |
